The smallest size for high strength hexagon bolt is M12, with M16 to M30 being commonly used. High strength hexagon bolt connections clamp the connecting plates together using a large preload within the bolt shank, generating significant friction to improve the overall integrity and rigidity of the connection. When subjected to shear force, depending on design and load requirements, they can be classified into friction-type high-strength bolt connections and bearing-type high-strength bolt connections.
Classification of High Strength Hexagon Bolts:
Friction-type high strength hexagon bolts: Suitable for beam and column connections in steel frame structures, solid-web beam connections, heavy-duty crane beam connections in industrial plants, braking systems, and connections in important structures subjected to dynamic loads.
Bearing-type high strength hexagon bolts: These can be used for shear connections in statically loaded structures or members indirectly subjected to dynamic loads where a small amount of slippage is permissible.
Tension-type high strength hexagon bolts: These bolts have lower fatigue strength under tension, and their load-bearing capacity under dynamic loads is unlikely to exceed 0.6P (where P is the bolt’s allowable axial force). Therefore, they are only suitable for use under static loads, such as flange connections and T-joints in compressed members.
