I Beam Steel
I beam steel is a hot-rolled or welded steel section with an “I”-shaped cross-section. It is mainly divided into ordinary I-beams, lightweight I-beams, and wide-flange I-beams (often mistakenly called H-beams).
The core characteristics of I beam steel are its high and narrow cross-section, approximately 1:6 slope on the inner flange, strong bending resistance but weaker torsional and lateral stiffness.
Description
I beam steel is a hot-rolled or welded steel section with an “I”-shaped cross-section. It is mainly divided into ordinary I-beams, lightweight I-beams, and wide-flange I-beams (often mistakenly called H-beams steel), such as ASTM A992 Wide Flange H Beam Steel.
The core characteristics of I beam steel are its high and narrow cross-section, approximately 1:6 slope on the inner flange, strong bending resistance but weaker torsional and lateral stiffness.
Characteristics of I beam steel:
1. Structural characteristics: The moment of inertia is relatively large in the web plane and relatively small in the vertical direction; the flanges are thinner on the outer side and thicker on the inner side (variable cross-section). For the same height, lightweight I-beams are lighter and have narrower flanges; it is not suitable for components subjected to axial compression or bending perpendicular to the web plane.
2. Mechanical properties: It excels at withstanding bending loads in the web plane, has good tensile and compressive strength, but low torsional stiffness and poor lateral stability; for the same weight, its section modulus and moment of inertia are lower than those of H-beams.
– Specifications: The “number” is indicated by the web height (cm) (e.g., 16 = 160mm height). All specifications are expressed as “height × flange width × web thickness” (e.g., 160 × 88 × 6). Ordinary I-beams conform to GB/T 706-2016, with specifications ranging from 10 to 63.
Applications of I beam Steel:
I beam steel is mainly used in load-bearing structures to withstand bending loads in the web plane. Typical applications include construction, bridges, machinery, transportation, and mining. However, it is not suitable for components subjected to axial compression or bending perpendicular to the web.
1. Building Structures: I beam steel is used as frame beams, columns, stairs, platforms, and large-span roof trusses in industrial plants. It is suitable for high-rise and large-span public buildings (such as stadiums and exhibition halls).
2. Bridges and Transportation: I beam steel is used as main beams and crossbeams in bridges, railway track supports, and crane track beams to bear vehicle or track loads.
3. Machinery and Vehicle Manufacturing: I beam steel is used to manufacture machine tool beds, crane supports, automobile chassis beams, and train car frames, utilizing its high bending stiffness.
4. Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering: I-beam steel is used as keel, bottom reinforcement beams, or platform structural components to enhance the longitudinal strength of ship hulls.
5. Mine Support: Specialized mining I-beam steel (such as 9–12) is used for collapsible supports in coal mine roadways to withstand surrounding rock pressure.
6. Temporary and Special Structures: I-beam steel is used for construction support frames, pipe supports, tower crane foundations, and auxiliary components for power transmission towers.
