Characteristics of U Channel Steel:

Core characteristics include: high structural efficiency, good bending and compressive strength, light weight, and convenient installation, but its torsional and lateral stability are relatively weak.

1. Highly efficient cross-sectional shape: The U-shaped cross-section of U Channel Steel keeps the flanges away from the neutral axis, improving bending stiffness and strength. It is more economical in terms of material and load-bearing capacity than solid steel for the same weight.

2. Lightweight and economical: Its theoretical weight is relatively low (e.g., approximately 5.41 kg/m for European standard UPN60), reducing the structural self-weight and foundation load, and lowering material and construction costs.

3. Convenient processing and installation: The straight flanges of U Channel Steel facilitate welding, bolting, or riveting; the grooves facilitate pipeline installation or component assembly, making it suitable for prefabricated structures.

4. Directional Mechanical Properties: Strong bending resistance in the height direction (high Ix), weak in the width direction (low Iy), suitable for vertical load-bearing components (such as columns, supports), unsuitable for primary torsional or lateral loads.

5. Two Main Applications: Construction/industrial use (such as domestic channel steel, European standard UPN/UPE, emphasizing general structural applications) and hot-rolled U-shaped steel for mining support (such as 25U, 29U, emphasizing compressibility and compressive strength, conforming to GB/T 4697-2008).

6. Limitations: Open cross-sections result in low torsional stiffness and susceptibility to local buckling, requiring reinforcement or combination to compensate; cold-formed (thin-walled) types are lighter than hot-rolled (thick-walled) types but have lower load-bearing capacity.

Applications of U-Channel Steel:

1. U Channel Steel (hot-rolled or cold-formed channel steel): Primarily used in building load-bearing/enclosure structures (such as purlins, supports, stair railings), machinery frames, vehicle and container manufacturing, power equipment bases/substation supports, curtain wall supports, etc., emphasizing load-bearing and connection.

2. Hot-rolled U Channel Steel for Mine Support: Specifically used for collapsible supports in mine roadways and tunnels, offering compressive strength and durability. Models include 25U, 29U, and 36U. This is a special structural steel and not used in general construction or drainage.
