Description

Galvanized steel wire is carbon steel wire coated with zinc via hot-dip or electroplating methods. Therefore, galvanized steel wire can be divided into hot-dip galvanized steel wire and electroplated galvanized steel wire.

Galvanized steel wire has a smooth, bright surface, free of cracks, knots, burrs, scratches, and rust. The zinc coating is uniform, has strong adhesion, offers long-lasting corrosion resistance, and exhibits excellent toughness and elasticity. Galvanized steel wire is widely used in various fields, including construction, mining, chemical industry, welded mesh, welded clothes hangers, handicrafts, woven wire mesh, highway guardrails, product packaging, and daily household applications.

Processing technology of galvanized steel wire:

1. Galvanized-then-Drawing Process:

To improve the performance of galvanized steel wire, the steel wire is lead-quenched, galvanized, and then drawn into the finished product. This process is called the Galvanized-then-Drawing process. The typical process flow is: steel wire – lead-quenching – galvanizing – drawing – finished steel wire.

The galvanizing-then-drawing process is the shortest of the galvanized steel wire drawing methods and can be used for either hot-dip galvanizing or electrogalvanizing followed by drawing. Hot-dip galvanizing followed by drawing offers superior mechanical properties compared to drawing followed by galvanizing, while electrogalvanizing followed by drawing creates a dense and durable zinc layer.

Both methods produce a thin, uniform zinc layer, reducing zinc consumption and alleviating the load on the galvanizing line.
2. Intermediate galvanizing followed by drawing:

The intermediate galvanizing followed by drawing process involves: steel wire – lead quenching – primary drawing – galvanizing – secondary drawing – finished steel wire. Intermediate galvanizing followed by drawing is characterized by the primary drawing of the lead-quenched steel wire followed by galvanizing, and then secondary drawing to the finished product. The galvanizing occurs between the two drawing stages, hence the name “intermediate galvanizing.”

Steel wire produced using intermediate galvanizing followed by drawing produces a thicker zinc layer than wire produced using galvanizing followed by drawing. Hot-dip galvanizing followed by drawing offers a high total compression ratio (from lead quenching to finished product), resulting in better performance than wire produced using galvanizing followed by drawing.

3. Hybrid Galvanizing and Drawing Process:

To produce ultra-high-strength (3000 N/mm²) galvanized steel wire, a “hybrid galvanizing and drawing” process is employed. The typical process flow is as follows: lead quenching – primary drawing – pre-galvanizing – secondary drawing – final galvanizing – tertiary drawing (dry drawing) – water tank drawing – finished steel wire.

This process can produce ultra-high-strength galvanized steel wire with a carbon content of 0.93-0.97%, a diameter of 0.26 mm, and a strength of 3921 N/mm². The zinc layer during drawing protects and lubricates the steel wire surface, ensuring no wire breakage during drawing.
