Description

Stainless steel rods are cylindrical stainless steel products widely used in automotive parts, aerospace, chemical, medical device, and food industries. Relevant standards include ASTM A276, “Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Bars and Profiles,” and the currently revised GB/T 1220 national standard, “Stainless Steel Rods.”

Classification of Stainless Steel Rods:

Based on material, they can be divided into three main series: 300, 200, and 400:

1. 300 series Stainless Steel Rods are mainly made of austenitic stainless steel, offering excellent corrosion resistance. 316L is suitable for marine environments, while 304L has strong resistance to intergranular corrosion.

2. 200 series SS Stainless Steel Rods contain chromium-nickel-manganese components, providing good oxidation resistance.

3. 400 series Stainless Steel Rods include martensitic and ferritic stainless steels, offering outstanding wear resistance but relatively weak corrosion resistance.

Applications of SS Steel Rods:

Stainless steel rods, with their excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and good machinability, are widely used in chemical, food and medical, machinery manufacturing, construction and decoration, automotive, aerospace, and marine engineering fields.

1. Chemical and Petrochemical Industries: Used in reactors, pumps, valves, and stainless steel pipelines (especially 316/316L, which is resistant to chloride ion corrosion);

2. Food and Pharmaceutical Industries: Used in the manufacture of storage tanks, conveyor belts, cutting tools, and agitators (304/316 meets hygiene standards and is easy to clean);

3. Medical Devices: Surgical instruments, implants, and stents (316L has good biocompatibility, 304 is used for general tools);

4. Machinery and Shaft Parts: Used in the manufacture of shafts, bearings, bolts, and gears (303 is easy to machinable, 420/630 has high hardness and wear resistance);

5. Construction and Decoration: Handrails, railings, and curtain wall components (304 bright rod combines aesthetics and atmospheric corrosion resistance);

6. Automotive and Aerospace: Exhaust systems (430), engine fasteners, and turbine components (630 is precipitation-hardening, high-temperature resistant, and high-strength);

7. Marine and Energy Industries: Used in ship shafts, seawater pipelines, and nuclear power equipment (316L is resistant to seawater pitting, 630 is used for high-pressure valves); 8. Hardware and Daily Necessities: Kitchenware, tableware, locks, and jewelry shafts (304 stainless steel balances strength and surface finish).

Different grades (e.g., 304 general purpose, 316 corrosion resistant, 420 for cutting tools, 630 high strength, 303 easy-to-cut) are suitable for different applications. Common diameters range from 1–300mm. Surface finishes include black rods (industrial blanks) and bright rods (precision/decorative).
