Hot Rolled Steel Sheet Pile

Hot Rolled Steel Sheet Pile (HSP) is a type of steel structural member formed through a high-temperature rolling process, featuring interlocking edges. It can be interlocked to form continuous retaining/water-retaining walls. Main types include U-shaped, Z-shaped, and straight-web type (often called “straight type”).

Description

Hot Rolled Steel Sheet Pile (HSP) is a type of steel structural member formed through a high-temperature rolling process, featuring interlocking edges. It can be interlocked to form continuous retaining/water-retaining walls. Main types include U-shaped, Z-shaped, and straight-web type (often called “straight type”).

Classification of Hot Rolled Steel Sheet Pile:

By Cross-Section Shape:

1. U Type Hot Rolled Steel Sheet Pile: Symmetrical cross-section, interlocking edges on both sides, convenient construction, good interchangeability, widely used for foundation pit support and temporary cofferdams (such as the “SLU” and “LU” series).

2. Z Type Hot Rolled Steel Sheet Pile: Asymmetrical cross-section, interlocking edges located on both sides of the neutral axis, continuous web, larger section modulus and moment of inertia, high stiffness, and small displacement, suitable for port revetments and deep-water cofferdams (high technical threshold, only a few companies worldwide can produce this).

3. Straight-web type (straight type) Hot Rolled Steel Sheet Pile: Cross-section approximately flat, low height, small footprint, suitable for narrow site ditch support or temporary retaining walls.

Note: L-shaped and S-shaped steel sheets are mostly cold-formed or specially customized sections and do not belong to the mainstream hot-rolled standard category; H-shaped steel piles belong to another category of “section steel piles” (GB/T 32285) and are not classified as hot rolled steel sheet piles.

Features of Hot Rolled Steel Sheet Pile:

1. High Strength and High Rigidity: Hot Rolled Steel Sheet Pile uses low-alloy steel (such as Q345B, SY390), with a yield strength of 345–460 MPa, uniform wall thickness, and excellent bending and shear resistance, making it suitable for high-load environments such as deep foundation pits and cofferdams.

2. Excellent Watertightness: Hot Rolled Steel Sheet Pile uses precision interlocking (such as Larssen type) mechanical locking to form a continuous sealing wall, suitable for high-salinity, deep-water, or seepage prevention projects.

3. Highly Efficient Construction: Hot Rolled Steel Sheet Pile is mechanically driven and extracted (using vibratory hammers or hydrostatic pressure), resulting in short construction periods, minimal land occupation, and suitability for most soil types, including clay, sand, and silt (excluding boulders/rock strata).

4. Reusable: Hot Rolled Steel Sheet Pile can generally be recycled 10–20 times or more. The steel is 100% recyclable after dismantling, making it environmentally friendly and low-carbon.

5. Excellent Durability: Designed for a lifespan of up to 50 years, some products (especially Z-type) feature enhanced corrosion resistance through zinc-aluminum-magnesium coating or thickened interlocking.

6. Standardized Dimensions and Stable Quality: Hot rolling ensures consistent cross-sectional geometry and mechanical properties, superior to cold-formed steel sheet piles.

The fundamental difference between hot-rolled steel sheet piles and cold-formed steel sheet piles lies in their manufacturing process (hot rolling vs. cold bending). The former offers superior performance but is more expensive, making it the dominant choice for large-scale permanent/temporary projects. Since 2018, China has achieved full domestic production of U/Z type sheet piles (through companies like Jinxi and Maanshan Iron & Steel), eliminating reliance on imports.

Applications of Hot Rolled Steel Sheet Pile:

Hot Rolled Steel Sheet Pile is primarily used for temporary or permanent retaining and water-blocking structures requiring high strength, high water tightness, and reusability. Typical applications include:

1. Foundation Pit Support: Hot Rolled Steel Sheet Pile is used for sidewall support and water tightness in deep foundation pits for subways and high-rise buildings;

2. Cofferdam Engineering: Hot Rolled Steel Sheet Pile is used for temporary or permanent cofferdams in underwater or deep-water foundation construction for bridges, docks, nuclear power plants, etc.;

3. Water Conservancy Bank Protection and Flood Control: Hot Rolled Steel Sheet Pile is used for reinforcement and seepage prevention walls for river channels, dams, locks, and breakwaters;

4. Ports, Wharves, and Waterways: Permanent wharf revetments, embankments, artificial islands, and breakwater structures;

5. Transportation and Underground Engineering: Tunnel working shafts, utility tunnel trenches, and railway/highway subgrade slope protection;

6. Emergency rescue and relief: Rapid sealing and support walls in emergency response to landslides, quicksand, floods, etc.

7. Contamination barrier: Vertical seepage barrier for contaminated sites, preventing the migration of pollutants.

Its U-shaped, Z-shaped, and other interlocking sections form a continuous, sealed wall through mechanical interlocking, possessing high bending stiffness, excellent water-stopping properties, rapid construction (mechanized excavation and extraction), and reusability (10–20 times or more). It is widely applicable to sandy soils, clay soils, and complex hydrogeological environments.
