Tapping Screws

Description

Tapping screws are fasteners that automatically form internal threads in the materials being joined without pre-tapping. They are widely used for joining metals, plastics, wood, and other materials.

Tapping screws consist of three parts: a head, a shank, and the end of the shank. The key components of a tapping screw are: head shape, tightening method, thread type, and end type.

Tapping screw head shapes:

Head shapes vary widely. These include round heads (semi-round heads), flat round heads, round head flanges (with washers), flat round head flanges (with washers), pan heads, pan head flanges (with washers), countersunk heads, semi-countersunk heads, cylindrical heads, spherical cylindrical heads, flared heads, hexagonal heads, hexagonal flange heads, and hexagonal flange (with washers) heads.

Tapping screw tightening methods:

Tightening method refers to the way the screw head is turned when installing and tightening the Tapping Screws. The basic methods are external tightening and internal tightening. Generally speaking, external tightening allows for a higher torque than any form of internal tightening (recessed thread). External screw-in types: Hexagonal, hexagonal flange, hexagonal convex flange, hexagonal flower type, etc.; Internal screw-in types: slotted, cross-slot H-type, cross-slot Z-type, cross-slot F-type, square slot, compound slot, internal spline, internal hexagonal flower type, internal triangular, internal hexagonal, internal 12-point, clutch slot, six-blade slot, high torque cross-slot, etc.

Tapping Screw Thread Types:

There are many types of threads, including self-tapping threads (wide thread), machine threads (standard thread), drywall screw threads, fiberboard screw threads, and other special threads. Threads can also be classified as single-lead (single-start), double-lead (double-start), multi-lead (multi-start), and high/low thread double-start threads.

Tapping Screw End Forms:

End forms are mainly tapered and flat. However, depending on the application, the screw-in portion of the tapping screw can be machined with cutting functions such as grooves, slots, cuts, or drill-like shapes. In some standards, even the same conical or flat end can have different forms, such as a round end.

Main applications of Tapping Screws:

1. Metal sheet connection: such as color steel sheets, steel structures, ventilation ducts, appliance housings, etc., commonly using ST thread self tapping screws.

2. Construction industry: Tapping screws are used for fixing light steel keels, drywall (gypsum board), and insulation boards; special drywall screws (flared head, 60° thread profile).

3. Automotive and machinery manufacturing: Tapping screws are used for assembling lightweight materials such as plastic parts, aluminum alloys, and fiberboard. Self-tapping locking screws (triangular rods) especially have anti-loosening functions and are suitable for vibration environments.

4. Electronic equipment: Miniature models (such as M1–M3) are used for internal fixing in mobile phones and computers, requiring high precision and non-standard customization capabilities.

5. Outdoor and corrosion-resistant scenarios: Using stainless steel (such as 304, 316) or galvanized passivated treatment, suitable for photovoltaic brackets, ships, chemical equipment, etc.
