Prepainted steel coils, also known as color-coated steel coils or color-coated sheets, are composite materials made from metal coils such as cold-rolled steel sheets, galvalume steel coil and galvanized steel coils as substrates. After surface pretreatment, they are coated with organic coatings and baked for curing. Prepainted steel coils combine the mechanical strength of steel sheets with the decorative properties and corrosion resistance of organic materials.

Prepainted steel coils can be classified according to the type of substrate into hot-dip galvanized color-coated coils (PPGI), aluminized zinc color-coated coils (PPGL, with stronger corrosion resistance), electro-galvanized color-coated coils, cold-rolled color-coated coils (the substrate has no coating and relies on a coating for protection), and aluminized color-coated coils (rare, used in high-temperature environments).

Production process and coating classification of prepainted steel coils:

1. Production process flow: The production of prepainted steel coils is mainly completed on continuous production lines. The core steps include substrate preparation, surface pretreatment (chemical degreasing, phosphating, passivation), coating (roller coating or spraying one or more layers of organic coating), and baking and curing.

Pretreatment: Removes oil and dirt from the substrate surface and forms a conversion film to enhance coating adhesion.

Coating and curing: The coating is evenly applied using a roller coating method, followed by high-temperature baking to cure the coating, and finally cooled and coiled.

2. Common Coating Types: Based on different coating compositions, Prepainted Steel Coils are mainly classified into the following categories, each with varying weather resistance and cost:

Polyester (PE): Good adhesion, rich colors, low cost, suitable for general environments, corrosion protection lifespan approximately 7-8 years.

Silicone-Modified Polyester (SMP): Superior abrasion resistance, heat resistance, and external durability compared to PE, with a service life up to 15 years, but slightly weaker processability.

High-Durability Polyester (HDP): Excellent color retention and UV resistance, high cost-effectiveness, service life approximately 15 years.

Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF): Excellent weather resistance, chalking resistance, and solvent resistance, high cost, relatively limited color choices, suitable for demanding environments.

Main Application Areas of Prepainted Steel Coils:

1. Construction: The largest consumer market for Prepainted Steel Coils, accounting for approximately 80%, widely used in roofs and wall panels of exhibition centers, stadiums, residential and commercial buildings.

Applicable Scenarios: Roofs, garage doors, eaves gutters, and downpipes in light industrial areas, commercial areas, and residential areas.

Emerging Applications: Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV), photovoltaic mounting systems, and energy storage equipment housings.

2. Home Appliances and Industry: Prepainted steel coatings are used to produce the outer panels for home appliances such as refrigerators, air conditioners, and washing machines, as well as in automotive manufacturing, transportation, and packaging materials.

Process Requirements: Home appliance products have the highest requirements for surface quality, coating performance, and formability.

3. Decorative Materials: Prepainted steel coatings create wood grain and metallic effects in interior decoration and are used in medical facilities, office buildings, airports, and other similar settings.
