Aluminum coil is a coiled metal sheet made primarily of aluminum or aluminum alloys through processes such as casting, hot rolling, and cold rolling. It is a fundamental product in the aluminum processing industry, delivered in coil form, but can also be flattened for for use as aluminum sheets.

Aluminum coil thickness typically ranges from 0.1mm to 10mm, and width varies from 200mm to 2800mm, depending on the specific process and requirements.

Classification of Aluminum Coil:

Aluminum coils are mainly classified into 8 major series based on alloy composition. Different series differ significantly in hardness and applications; when purchasing, it is essential to first check the grade and then determine the processing method.

Classification by Alloy Grade:

1. 1 Series Pure Aluminum Coil: Contains over 99% aluminum, representative models are 1050 and 1060. It is soft, easy to process, and the cheapest, commonly used for billboards, chemical pipelines, or ordinary kitchen utensils.

2. 3-Series Rust-Resistant Aluminum Coils: Manganese is added, with the representative model 3003. They have strong rust resistance and are stronger than pure aluminum. They are most commonly used in air conditioner casings, refrigerator liners, and building curtain walls.

3. 5-Series Aluminum-Magnesium Coils: Magnesium is added, with representative models 5052 and 5083. They are lightweight and high-strength, resistant to seawater corrosion, and are the first choice for ship structures, automotive fuel tanks, and high-pressure vessels.

4. Other Special Series:

– 2-Series and 7-Series: Extremely high hardness, belonging to aerospace aluminum materials, containing copper and zinc respectively. Rarely used in general industry, mainly for aircraft structural components.

– 6-Series: Contains magnesium and silicon, with medium strength, good anodizing and coloring, suitable for electronic casings and hardware accessories.

– 8-Series: Commonly seen in the 8011 model, mostly used for bottle caps or heat sinks, and sometimes as aluminum foil.

Classification by Surface Finish:

1. Color-coated Aluminum Coil: The surface is coated with paint, offering a variety of colors and corrosion resistance. Suitable for building exterior decoration or appliance panels. Coating types include polyester and fluorocarbon.

2. Embossed Aluminum Coil: The surface is embossed with patterns, providing anti-slip properties and an aesthetically pleasing appearance. Commonly used as pipe insulation layers or decorative packaging.

3. Plain Coil: Without special coatings, retaining the natural color of aluminum. Primarily used for subsequent deep processing or internal structural components, such as power plant pipe insulation.

Characteristics of Aluminum Coil:

1. Low Density and Lightweight: Density is approximately 2.7 g/cm³ (about 1/3 that of iron or copper), significantly reducing structural weight and facilitating lightweight design.

2. Adjustable Strength and Good Plasticity: Through alloying (e.g., adding magnesium, manganese, zinc) and heat treatment, tensile strength can be increased from the lower levels of pure aluminum to over 500 MPa of ultra-hard aluminum; it also possesses excellent elongation, facilitating deep processing such as stamping and bending.

3. No low-temperature brittleness: Maintains good toughness even at low temperatures, suitable for cryogenic applications such as freezing and aerospace.

4. Strong corrosion resistance: Easily forms a dense oxide film on the surface, resisting corrosion from the atmosphere, water, and various chemical media; 3-series (manganese-containing) and 5-series (magnesium-containing) alloys perform particularly well in humid or marine environments.

5. Weather resistance and decorative properties: Can be achieved through anodizing, color coating (polyester/fluorocarbon), and other surface treatments to achieve high gloss, wood grain/stone grain imitations, and ultra-long weather resistance (fluorocarbon coatings have a warranty of over 20 years).

6. Environmentally friendly and flame-retardant: Does not release toxic gases, its flame retardant rating is usually not lower than B1, and it has a high recyclability (high recycling value).

7. Good electrical and thermal conductivity: Its conductivity is approximately 60% of copper, but it is lightweight, commonly used in heat sinks, cable shielding, and heat exchangers.

8. Easy to process: Soft and easy to cut, not easily deformed after shearing (no residual stress), suitable for rapid prototyping on assembly lines.

9. Flexible specifications: Thickness typically ranges from 0.2mm to 10mm, width from 20mm to 2600mm, alloy grades (1-8 series) and tempers (O temper, H temper, T temper, etc.) can be customized as needed.

Different alloy series have different focuses: 1 series pure aluminum has low cost and good formability; 3 series has excellent rust resistance; 5 series has high strength and good corrosion resistance; 7 series is ultra-hard but has weak weldability. Actual selection needs to be based on the application scenario (such as building insulation, electronic packaging, transportation structures) to match the specific grade.

Applications of Aluminum Coil:

Aluminum coils have a wide range of uses, mainly in major industries such as construction, transportation, packaging, and electronics. Different materials and thicknesses of aluminum coils are used for different specific tasks.

Building Decoration:

1. Exterior Walls and Roofs: Color-coated aluminum coils are commonly used for curtain walls and roof tiles; they are corrosion-resistant, aesthetically pleasing, and can replace color steel sheets.

2. Pipe Insulation: Power plants and chemical plants often use insulated aluminum coils as a protective layer for their pipes, providing rust prevention and a beautiful appearance.

3. Interior Decoration: Coated aluminum coils can be used for ceilings and walls, offering various effects such as wood grain and stone texture.

Industrial Manufacturing:

1. Transportation: 5-series or 7-series aluminum coils are used for automotive and aircraft structural components; 3003 aluminum coils are commonly used for battery casings.

2. Electronics and Electrical Appliances: Used to manufacture circuit boards, heat sinks, and appliance casings such as air conditioner and refrigerator panels.

3. Machinery and Equipment: Used to manufacture various parts; alloy aluminum coils are used in applications requiring high strength.

Daily Life:

1. Food Packaging: Made into aluminum foil for flexible food packaging or can bodies.

2. Pharmaceutical Packaging: Blister packaging for tablets and capsules commonly uses 8011 aluminum alloy foil.

3. Household Foil: Tin foil used in the kitchen is mostly aluminum foil, and it’s very thin.
