Description
API 5L X52 Steel Pipe is an industrial pipe made of carbon steel, produced by hot rolling process, mainly used for the transportation of gas, water and oil in the petroleum and natural gas industries. Its implementation standards include GB/T9711.1 and API SPEC 5L. The common specifications are 34-Φ3500mm in diameter, 3.0-60mm in wall thickness, and the connection methods include welding, coupling connection and socket connection.
Features of API 5L X52 Steel Pipe:
API 5L X52 Steel Pipe is a medium-to-high strength pipeline steel pipe conforming to the American Petroleum Institute (API) Spec 5L standard. It has a minimum yield strength of 360 MPa (52,000 psi) and is primarily used for oil and gas transportation. It is divided into two categories: seamless steel pipe and welded steel pipe (such as ERW steel pipe, LSAW steel pipe, and SSAW steel pipes). Based on quality grades, it is classified into PSL1 and PSL2 (the latter includes delivery condition suffixes such as N, M, and Q).
1. Mechanical Properties: API 5L X52 Steel Pipe yield strength ≥360 MPa (typically 360–530 MPa), tensile strength 460–760 MPa, yield-to-tensile ratio ≤0.93; Charpy impact energy at -20℃ is generally ≥40 J (PSL2 has stricter requirements).
2. Chemical Composition: Low-carbon alloy steel (C ≤0.28%, Mn ≤1.40%, P ≤0.030%, S ≤0.030%), carbon equivalent (CE) ≤0.43% to ensure weldability; if X52M (thermomechanically rolled), it contains microalloying elements such as V, Nb, and Ti and undergoes controlled rolling and cooling (TMCP).
3. Standard: API Spec 5L (46th edition), corresponding to L360 in GB/T 9711; PSL2 is stricter than PSL1 in terms of impact toughness, non-destructive testing (UT/ET), and chemical composition control.
4. Processing and Condition: API 5L X52 Steel Pipe can be delivered in hot-rolled, normalized (N), and thermomechanically rolled (M) conditions; X52M has better low-temperature toughness and weldability.
5. Applications and Advantages: API 5L X52 Steel Pipe is suitable for medium- and high-pressure long-distance oil and gas pipelines, city gas pipelines, and chemical pipelines; it possesses good strength, toughness, corrosion resistance, and processing/welding properties; common specifications include an outer diameter of 21.3–1219.8 mm (seamless) or larger (welded pipe), and a wall thickness of 2–40+ mm.
6. Inspection Requirements: API 5L X52 Steel Pipe must pass a hydrostatic test (≥1.5 times the working pressure) and ultrasonic/eddy current testing. PSL2 requires an additional drop hammer tear (DWTT) or impact test.
Note: Suffixes such as “X52N” and “X52M” indicate specific delivery processes, not independent steel grades; actual performance is subject to the procurement technical conditions (such as PSL1/2 and additional clauses).
Applications of API 5L X52 Steel Pipe:
API 5L X52 Steel Pipe is primarily used for long-distance pipelines transporting fluids such as oil, natural gas, and water. It is also used in chemical, urban gas, water conservancy, and some structural engineering projects.
1. Oil and Gas Transportation: Onshore/submarine oil pipelines and gas pipelines (such as the West-East Gas Pipeline and gathering pipelines), suitable for medium to high pressure environments or those containing small amounts of H₂S (if NACE MR0175 is met).
2. Urban and Industrial Pipelines: Urban gas distribution systems, industrial plant process pipelines, and water supply and drainage projects.
3. Special Applications: API 5L X52 Steel Pipe is used for transporting chemical media (such as steam and liquefied petroleum gas) and as main pipelines for agricultural irrigation. In scenarios with moderate strength requirements and large-diameter welded pipes (such as SSAW/LSAW), it can be used for structural support (such as piling pipes and bridge supports), but this is not its primary design purpose.
API 5L X52 Steel Pipe belongs to the steel grade classification in the American Petroleum Standard (API). Its material is carbon steel pipe, and its cross-section shape is a round tube. It is divided into seamless steel tubes and welded pipes according to the process. The main steel grades include L245, L290, L360, L418, L480, G.R B, X42, X46, X56, X65, X70, X80, X100, etc. The pipe end design includes flat end, threaded end and socket end, which is suitable for connection requirements in different scenarios, such as end welding or socket connection.
API 5L X52 Steel Pipe is manufactured by hot rolling process and implements the dual standards of GB/T9711.1 and API SPEC 5L. The main steel grades of API 5L Steel Pipes include basic grades such as L245, L290, L360, and high-strength grades such as X42, X46, X56, X65, and X70, which can meet the transportation requirements under different pressure environments.
