Pressure Vessel Steel Plate

Pressure vessel steel plates are special steels used specifically for manufacturing the shells and pressure-bearing components of pressure vessels, requiring long-term safe operation under harsh conditions such as high pressure, high temperature, or low temperature. They are widely used in the petrochemical, energy, nuclear power, and military industries, specifically in equipment including reactors, heat exchangers, spherical tanks, boiler drums, and liquefied gas storage and transportation containers.

Classification of Pressure Vessel Steel Plates:

1. By Composition: Pressure vessel steel plates are classified into carbon steel (e.g., Q245R), low-alloy high-strength steel (e.g., Q345R, Q370R), and alloy steel (e.g., hydrogen-resistant steel 15CrMoR).

2. By Operating Condition: Includes plates for ambient temperature vessels, cryogenic steel (e.g., 09MnNiDR, used in LNG storage tanks), and high-temperature hydrogen-resistant steel (e.g., 12Cr2Mo1R, used in hydrogenation reactors).

3. By Standard: Pressure Vessel Steel Plates commonly conform to Chinese standards (GB/T 713 series), American ASME standards (such as SA516), and European EN standards (such as P355GH).

Description

Pressure vessel steel plates are special steels used specifically for manufacturing the shells and pressure-bearing components of pressure vessels, requiring long-term safe operation under harsh conditions such as high pressure, high temperature, or low temperature. They are widely used in the petrochemical, energy, nuclear power, and military industries, specifically in equipment including reactors, heat exchangers, spherical tanks, boiler drums, and liquefied gas storage and transportation containers.

Classification of Pressure Vessel Steel Plates:

1. By Composition: Pressure vessel steel plates are classified into carbon steel plate (e.g., Q245R), low-alloy high-strength steel (e.g., Q345R, Q370R), and alloy steel plate (e.g., hydrogen-resistant steel 15CrMoR).

2. By Operating Condition: Includes plates for ambient temperature vessels, cryogenic steel (e.g., 09MnNiDR, used in LNG storage tanks), and high-temperature hydrogen-resistant steel (e.g., 12Cr2Mo1R, used in hydrogenation reactors).

3. By Standard: Pressure Vessel Steel Plates commonly conform to Chinese standards (GB/T 713 series), American ASME standards (such as SA516 Pressure Vessel Steel Plate), and European EN standards (such as P355GH).

Characteristics of Pressure Vessel Steel Plates:

1. Balanced Mechanical Properties: Pressure Vessel Steel Plates possess high yield strength and tensile strength (e.g., Q245R yield strength ≥ 245MPa, Q345R yield strength ≥ 345MPa), while ensuring sufficient elongation after fracture to withstand internal pressure without plastic deformation or fracture.

2. Excellent Low-Temperature Toughness: By strictly controlling phosphorus and sulfur content and adding microalloying elements (such as Ni, Nb, V), Pressure Vessel Steel Plates significantly reduce the ductile-brittle transition temperature, preventing brittle fracture at low temperatures (e.g., impact energy meets standards at -40℃ or even -196℃).

3. Excellent weldability: Carbon content is typically controlled at a low level (generally ≤0.25%), resulting in a low carbon equivalent. This reduces the likelihood of cold cracking during welding, making it suitable for various welding processes. Post-weld heat treatment performance is also stable.

4. High material homogeneity and purity: Pressure Vessel Steel Plate employs ladle refining and vacuum degassing processes, strictly limiting non-metallic inclusions. Internal defects (such as inclusions and cracks) are subject to extremely stringent requirements, typically requiring ultrasonic testing.

5. Strict composition control: Pressure Vessel Steel Plate is primarily composed of carbon steel and low-alloy steel. The low-carbon design is reinforced with manganese and silicon. For special applications, elements such as chromium, molybdenum, and nickel are added to improve heat resistance, corrosion resistance, or low-temperature performance.

6. Specific delivery conditions: Grain refinement and microstructure homogeneity are often achieved through heat treatment processes such as normalizing, controlled rolling (TMCP), or quenching and tempering, ensuring consistent properties throughout the thickness direction.

7. Wide Temperature Range: Pressure Vessel Steel Plates are suitable for a wide temperature range, from room temperature to 500℃ (some models can reach 560℃), with specialized low-temperature steels available to cover the range of -20℃ to -196℃.

8. Corrosion Resistance and Hydrogen-Induced Cracking Resistance: For petrochemical and other environments, hydrogen sulfide (HIC) resistant or hydrogen-resistant steel varieties can be developed to extend equipment life.

9. Wide Range of Specifications: Thicknesses are typically 5~200mm (some up to 250mm), meeting diverse needs from small gas cylinders to large spherical tanks.

Applications of Pressure Vessel Steel Plates:

Pressure Vessel Steel Plates are specialized steel materials used to manufacture the shells and pressure-bearing components of pressure-bearing equipment. Their core application is in constructing sealed containers capable of withstanding certain pressure and temperature changes in the petroleum, chemical, and energy industries.

1. Petrochemical Industry: Used in the manufacture of reactors, heat exchangers, separators, towers, oil and gas tanks, and liquefied gas tanks for gas separation, storage, and chemical reaction processes.

2. Energy and Power Industry: Pressure Vessel Steel Plates are used in key pressure-bearing components such as boiler drums, nuclear power plant reactor pressure vessels, hydroelectric high-pressure water pipes, turbine casings, and steam accumulators.

3. Gas Storage and Transportation: Pressure Vessel Steel Plates are used to manufacture spherical storage tanks (spherical tanks), mobile pressure vessels (such as LPG cylinders), and cryogenic liquid storage tanks, covering operating conditions from ambient temperature to cryogenic (-196℃).

4. Other Special Equipment: Pressure Vessel Steel Plates are used in military, scientific research, and machinery manufacturing for high-pressure vessels, multi-layered encased containers, and equipment for corrosion-resistant special environments.
