Description
Carbon steel plate, also known as carbon structural steel plate, is widely used in construction, manufacturing, machinery, transportation, and energy. It is a sheet material rolled from carbon steel, primarily composed of iron and carbon, and contains few other alloying elements. It is one of the most basic forms of steel in industry.
Classification of Carbon Steel Plate:
I. Classification by Carbon Content
1. Low-carbon steel plate (C ≤ 0.25%): such as Q195, Q235, SPCC steel sheet, ST12, 08F. Good plasticity, excellent weldability and formability, used in automobile bodies, containers, building structures, and hardware.
2. Medium-carbon steel plate (0.25% < C ≤ 0.60%): such as 45, 40Mn. Balanced strength and toughness, used for shafts, gears, connecting rods, and other mechanical parts after heat treatment.
3. High-carbon steel plate (C > 0.60%): such as T8, T10 (often classified as tool steel). High hardness and wear resistance, used for springs, molds, and wear-resistant parts; rarely used in the form of “ordinary carbon steel plate”.
II. By Quality Grade (Based on S and P Impurity Content)
1. Ordinary Carbon Structural Steel (P/S ≤ 0.05%): Such as Q235A, Q235B. Low cost, used for general structural components, bridges, factories, and reinforcing steel.
2. High-Quality Carbon Structural Steel (P/S ≤ 0.035%): Such as 20, 45. Stable performance, used for important mechanical parts and pressure vessels steel plate.
3. High-Grade/Special-Grade High-Quality Steel (P/S ≤ 0.025% or lower): Used in aerospace, high-end bearings, and high-fatigue components; rarely supplied in the form of conventional “carbon steel plate”.
III. By Process and Form
1. Hot-Rolled Carbon Steel Plate (Thickness typically ≥ 4mm): Surface oxide scale, lower precision, used for vehicle frames, ship plates, building steel, and storage tanks (such as Q235B hot-rolled medium plate).
2. Cold-rolled carbon steel sheet (thickness usually < 4mm): Smooth surface, precise dimensions, used for appliance housings, automotive body panels, and deep-drawn products (such as SPCC, ST12, DC01).
3. Classified by deoxidation method: Rimmed steel (F) (low cost, aging sensitive), killed steel (Z) (uniform performance, used for important structures), semi-killed steel (b).
IV. Examples of special grades by application:
1. Building/engineering structures: Q235 (including Q235A/B/C/D), SS400, A36 steel plate (hot-rolled medium-thick plate).
2. Automotive manufacturing: SPCC, SPCD (ordinary stamping), SPCE (deep drawing), ST13/ST14 (cold-rolled).
3. Pressure vessels/boilers: 20g (GB 713, low-carbon killed steel, C≈0.16–0.22%).
4. Mechanical Parts: 45 steel plate (requires heat treatment), 35Mn (high-strength bolts, shafts).
5. Daily Hardware/General Parts: Q195, 08F (cold-rolled sheet, used for iron drums, nails, supports).
Applications of Carbon Steel Plate:
V. Typical Application Areas
1. Construction and Infrastructure: Q235 hot-rolled plate/section steel for bridges, factories, reinforcing bars, scaffolding.
2. Transportation: Low-carbon cold-rolled plate for automobile bodies, chassis, wheel rims; medium-carbon steel for axles, gears.
3. Machinery Manufacturing: High-quality medium-carbon steel plates (45, 40Mn) processed and heat-treated for shafts, connecting rods, sleeves.
4. Energy Equipment: 20g, 16Mng (low alloy, but base carbon steel) for boilers/pressure vessels.
5. Daily Necessities and Light Industry: Cold-rolled low-carbon steel sheets (SPCC, DC01) are used to make appliance casings, food cans, and toolboxes.
