316L Stainless Steel Sheet
316L stainless steel sheet, 316L is a stainless steel material grade, AISI 316L is the corresponding American grade, sus 316L is the corresponding Japanese grade. my country’s unified digital code is S31603, the standard grade is 022Cr17Ni12Mo2 (new standard), and the old grade is 00Cr17Ni14Mo2, which means it mainly contains Cr, Ni, and Mo, and the number indicates the approximate percentage. The national standard is GB/T 20878-2007.
Description
316L Stainless Steel Sheet is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel sheet (Chinese grade 022Cr17Ni12Mo2, American standard ASTM 316L, Japanese standard SUS316L). Due to the addition of molybdenum (Mo, 2.0–3.0%) and ultra-low carbon (C ≤ 0.03%), it significantly outperforms 304 stainless steel sheet in corrosion resistance, weldability, and low-temperature toughness.
316L Stainless Steel Sheet is available in hot-rolled stainless steel plate and cold-rolled stainless steel sheet varieties.
Characteristics of 316L Stainless Steel Sheet:
1. Excellent Corrosion Resistance: 316L Stainless Steel Sheet is particularly resistant to chloride pitting corrosion and reducing acid corrosion (such as dilute sulfuric acid and organic acids), superior to 304 stainless steel. It exhibits stability in marine atmospheres, industrial polluted environments, and chlorine-containing media, but is not resistant to concentrated sulfuric acid (>85%) or strong oxidizing environments.
2. Strong resistance to intergranular corrosion: The low carbon content (≤0.03%) of 316L Stainless Steel Sheet inhibits chromium carbide precipitation during welding or heat treatment, avoiding chromium depletion at grain boundaries. Post-weld solution annealing is usually unnecessary.
3. Good weldability and formability: 316L Stainless Steel Sheet can be welded using conventional methods such as TIG/MIG/manual arc welding, resulting in joints with good corrosion resistance. It has a moderate tendency for cold work hardening, making it easy to stamp, bend, and deep draw.
4. Non-magnetic and excellent low-temperature toughness: The solution-treated state is austenitic and essentially non-magnetic. It can be used in the temperature range of -196℃ to 800℃ (continuous use recommended <1700℃/intermittent use <1600℃). Avoid prolonged exposure in the 800–1575℃ range to prevent sensitization or σ-phase precipitation.
5. Mechanical and Physical Properties: Density approximately 7.98 g/cm³, tensile strength ≥480 MPa, yield strength ≥177 MPa, elongation ≥40%; low thermal conductivity (approximately 15.1 W/(m·K) at 100℃), requiring careful control of thermal deformation.
6. Diverse Surface Treatments: 316L Stainless Steel Sheet commonly offers finishes such as 2B, BA, No.4 brushed, HL matte, and 8K mirror, meeting decorative or functional requirements.
Applications of 316L Stainless Steel Sheet:
1. Chemical and Pharmaceutical Equipment: 316L Stainless Steel Sheet is used in reactors, pipelines, storage tanks, and heat exchangers (resistant to acids, alkalis, solvents, and chloride ion environments).
2. Food and Beverage Industry: Dairy, beer, and pharmaceutical production lines (meets hygiene standards, easy to clean, and resistant to dye/fermentation media corrosion).
3. Marine and Coastal Engineering: 316L Stainless Steel Sheet is used in marine components, offshore platforms, seawater desalination plants, and coastal building curtain walls (resistant to chloride corrosion).
