Description

Stainless steel hex bars are solid, long, rectangular stainless steel profiles with a regular hexagonal cross-section; they are a type of stainless steel bar.

Due to their regular hexagonal cross-section, stainless steel hex bars possess high torque transmission efficiency, high material utilization, and excellent corrosion and wear resistance. They are primarily used as a basic raw material for machining various precision parts and structural components.

Classification of Stainless Steel Hex Bars:

Classification by Material Grade: This is the most fundamental classification method, determining corrosion resistance and applicable environments.

1. Austenitic Stainless Steel Hex Bars: The most widely used type, non-magnetic or weakly magnetic.

– 304/304L: General-purpose type, resistant to atmospheric corrosion, suitable for building decoration and food machinery.

– 316/316L: Contains molybdenum, offering stronger resistance to pitting corrosion, suitable for marine engineering and chemical equipment.

– 303: Free-machining type (with added sulfur/selenium), specifically designed for machining bolts and nuts on automatic lathes; its corrosion resistance is slightly lower than 304.

– 200 Series (e.g., 201/202): Chromium-nickel-manganese based, lower cost, relatively weaker corrosion resistance, mostly used in mildly corrosive environments.

2. Martensitic/Ferritic Stainless Steel Hex Bar: Such as 410, 430, etc., magnetic, can be hardened by heat treatment, commonly used in cutting tools or structural parts.

3. Duplex Stainless Steel Hex Bar: Such as 2205, combines high strength and excellent resistance to chloride ion corrosion, used in extremely harsh environments.

Classification by Manufacturing Process and Surface Condition: Surface quality and precision vary significantly depending on the processing method.

1. Hot-rolled Black Stainless Steel Hex Bar: Surface with oxide scale, wider dimensional tolerances (complies with GB/T 702), suitable for subsequent rough machining or structural parts.

2. Cold-drawn bright Stainless Steel Hex Bar: After cold drawing, fine grinding, or polishing, it has a bright (silver-like) surface and high dimensional accuracy (up to ±0.01mm, conforming to GB/T 4226), directly used for precision parts.

3. Ground/polished Stainless Steel Hex Bar: Further surface treatment on the cold-drawn surface, resulting in extremely high smoothness, used in applications requiring high aesthetic appeal.

Classification by cross-sectional structure:

1. Solid Stainless Steel Hex Bar: Standard shape, with a regular hexagonal cross-section. Nominal dimensions are expressed as the length of opposite sides (S), widely used in fastener manufacturing.

2. Hollow Stainless Steel Hex Bar: Hexagonal on the outside and circular or hexagonal on the inside; a type of shaped steel pipe, lightweight and with strong bending and torsional resistance, used to reduce structural load.

Applications of Stainless Steel Hex Bars:

1. Fastener Manufacturing (Primary Use): Stainless steel hex bars are directly machined into standard parts such as hex bolts, socket head cap screws, and nuts. Compared to round bar milling, the material utilization rate of hexagonal bars can be increased to over 85%, significantly reducing costs.

2. Machinery and Precision Components: Stainless steel hex bars are used to manufacture valve stems, bushings, gear shafts, and connectors. Their angular structure facilitates fixture positioning, making them suitable for mass production on automatic lathes. They are commonly found in hydraulic systems, pumps, valves, and transmission mechanisms.

3. Chemical and Marine Engineering: Using molybdenum-containing materials such as 316L, they are used for reactor agitator shafts, pipe fittings, and fasteners on offshore platforms. Their excellent resistance to pitting corrosion allows them to withstand strong acid and high-salt environments.

4. Automotive and Aerospace: As a raw material for engine compartment connectors, exhaust system fasteners, and high-strength fasteners, requiring materials with high fatigue strength and temperature resistance.

5. Food, Medical and Building Decoration: Food-grade 304 stainless steel is used for mixing shafts in kitchen equipment and handles in surgical instruments; it is also used for architectural hardware such as curtain wall connectors and railing accessories that require aesthetics and rust prevention.
